R.W. Bro. Douglas Everett Galt

At the 156th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario, a well-known local Freemason, Dr. Douglas E. Galt, was elected and invested as the District Deputy Grand Master of Ontario District.

R.W. Bro. Galt began his Masonic journey in 1962 when he was initiated into Maple Leaf Lodge No. 119 in Bath, Ontario. He was Worshipful Master (W.M.) of this, his Mother Lodge, in 1971. Following a move to the Salem area near Colborne, he became affiliated with Colborne Lodge No.91 in 2005, serving as W.M. in 2008. He is one of the Lodge's most active Masons; justifying the Brethren's choice for his progression to DDGM.

Doug is also active in concordant Masonic bodies, having received his 14th (1976) and 18th (1979) Degrees in Peterborough Lodge of Perfection and Rose Croix respectively; and his 32nd Degree (1980) at Moore Sovereign Consistory (Hamilton). He was coroneted Honorary Inspector General, 33 Degrees in 2004. He has also seen personal growth in York Rite Masonry; obtaining the Mark Master Mason Degree, the most Excellent Master Degree and the Supreme Degree of the Holy Arch in 2008-2009.

On a personal level, R.W. Bro. Galt was born in Kingston in 1938. He grew up on a dairy farm in Lennox and Addington County; attending Bath Public School and Nappanee and District Secondary School before proceeding to Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph where he graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1962. Doug also holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Queen's University and a Graduate Diploma in Pathology from the University of Guelph.

In the early years of his career, he saw employment in private practice as a Veterinarian; then into a Diagnostic Veterinary Pathology Laboratory; eventually progressing to head up the Brighton Veterinary Services Laboratory - retiring in 1994. He also practiced Veterinary Medicine/Pathology in Indonesia.

Doug has held offices in Municipal, County and Provincial Governments; most notably, serving Northumberland County in the Ontario Legislature from 1995-2003. In 2002 he was appointed Chief Government Whip and Minister-Without-Portfolio.

Doug has also had extensive community involvement in several areas; serving in various Lion's Clubs (including a year as District Governor for Lion's Clubs International); the founding president of the Northumberland Land Trust; United Way Campaign Manager; President Colborne Probus Club; member of the Lakeshore Shrine Club; and was a Governor on the Board Of Governors of Loyalist College in Belleville.
